Brentwood XC Speeds Through Qualifiers Into Provincials

This past Wednesday, October 20th, the cross country team attended the Provincial XC Qualifiers at Beaver Lake. The energy from the team was crackling with electricity as the runners arrived and prepared for the race. The results were a reason to celebrate.

The team left at 11:30 am from Crooks Hall for a 36-minute drive to the race location. Beaver Lake, located in Saanich, looked vibrant with autumn colours reflected brilliantly across the lake. The running trails were beautifully maintained and brimming with lush plant life.

The race spanned 4.8km for juniors and 5.5km for seniors. The map contained a 1km loop and a 2km loop; the juniors ran two laps of the 2km loop while the seniors ran the 1km loop and two laps of the 2km loop. “It actually felt really good and not too long” said Lily H, Alex ‘22, when asked about the course. The course contained some tricky hills, although the team took on the challenge with excitement.

The mud was the worst part, causing the runners to slip and slide, and eventually cross the finish line caked in mud like tired but happy mudpies. Huge mud puddles lined the course everywhere. When asked about the mud, Eamon R, Privett ‘22, was the first to respond, “It took me three steps to travel an equivalent of one step in that amount of mud.”

Katelyn M, Hope ‘24, mentioned that “The course was difficult, but compared to some of our other races in the Cowichan Trail Series, it felt pretty great.” Personally, the anticipation of qualifying for provincials felt more strenuous than the actual course.

The team had excellent participation and results during the Cowichan Trail Series, the weekly races that occurred all throughout the past month. All the energy and training that was shown in practices and those races were in preparation for the moment we would all race for our own spot in the BC Cross Country Provincials.

The team did incredibly well with Luise H placing 8th in Junior Girls, and Brentwood teams placing 4th in Senior Girls and 5th in Senior Boys. This means that we will be sending two senior teams, as well as Luise, as an individual, to provincials.

Provincials will take place on November 6th in Jericho Park, Vancouver. The qualifying team will be traveling to Vancouver for the race. We are all extremely excited for the runners attending and will be wishing them amazing luck for the big race.
