Brentwood Senior Girls 8+ win Opening Day Regatta

For the first time since 1991, the Brentwood Girls Varsity eight won the high school division at the prestigious Opening Day Regatta in Seattle, Washington. In front of a crowd of over 100,000 people, the Brentwood girls raced down the 2000 m course in 7:04 to win the high school division, four seconds ahead of Holy Names Academy of Seattle. The crew of Stephanie Ridenour (Duncan, BC), Deirdre Huestis, Natasha Hollingsworth, Erin Young, Quinn Erickson, Mary Johnston, Adelaide Backer (Mill Bay, BC), Tiara Pettinger (Mill Bay, BC) and cox Cassidy Johnston received the girl's high school trophy at the closing ceremonies.
The Brentwood boys eight raced in the high school division against Shawnigan Lake School, Lake Oswago of Oregon and Vashon Island High School (coached by Brentwood alum Lucas Ridinger - Class of 2000). By the 500 m mark, it was a two-boat race between Shawnigan and Brentwood. Shawnigan took a one length advantage and never relinquished their lead, winning in a time of 6:03. Brentwood was second in 6:07. This was a reversal of the race the previous week at the Brentwood Regatta where Brentwood beat Shawnigan in the Club eight by just over three seconds. Both crews would have finished first and third in the open junior race. The two crews will square off against each other again this coming weekend at the Shawnigan Lake School Regatta. This is the first time since the late 1980's that the two schools have had such a great rivalry this late in the season.
