On Saturday members of the Gorge Rowing Club travelled up from Victoria to spend the day training with our boys’ teams. Using our equipment, the Gorge athletes were able to get on the water without having to bring their own equipment.  The morning practice pitted a Gorge quad and coxed four against our top quad (Ruben S, Martin S, Andrew C and Cameron Y) and two coxed fours (Jack K, Lance B, Daniel H, Toby G and Jason M and the Channing B, Paiton B, Michael L, Sean H and Brett L). Two of our Junior Boys’ eights also came out to row against Gorge’s JV crew.

The workout consisted of two ten minute pieces at capped rates and a final seven minute piece on the school course. The Brentwood crews were successful at all three levels winning all three pieces.

After breakfast, while our Brentwood rowers were in class, the Gorge crews had an opportunity to use our rowing tank and ergometer room, which they do not have at their own club.

After lunch we met for the second workout. This time we went out in four eights, two from Gorge and our Varsity 8+ (Jack K, Lance B, Martin B, Cameron Y, Andrew C, Ruben S, Toby G, Jason M and Daniel H) and JV 8+ (Joel C, Paiton B, Sean H, Brett L, Michael L, Nicholas R, Ian S, Hayden F and Jonathan H). The workout consisted of 1 x 2000 m, 2 x 1000 m and 2 x 500 m. Both Brentwood crews were successful in all five pieces. In the last 500 m piece of the day, our JV crew narrowly lost to the Gorge Varsity crew by a few feet.

This was a great opportunity for both clubs to prepare for our regatta which is just around the corner. Our next competition is the Maple Bay Regatta this Saturday. The Varsity Boys’ 8+ will be staying back at the school to have a duel workout with Shawnigan Lake’s varsity crew.

Mr. Brian Carr, Head of Rowing
