August 10-13 three Brentwood students participated in the 2020 BC Juvenile Boys Golf Championships at the Cowichan Golf Club. Gavyn K, Jagre K and I, Lucas K, all arrived at the golf course for the official practice round on August 10th. We were all lucky enough to have a bit of an advantage over the rest of the players as we all had played the course before on multiple occasions. The practice round was great fun as everyone completed the round alongside their friends before shifting their focus to the tough three days ahead.

The morning of August 11th saw a number of low scores posted but none were from the Brentwood trio. Gavyn finished his round with a 76, Jagre with a 74 and I, nursing a back injury, carded my worst round of the year with an 81. Gavyn and I knew that something had to change if we wanted to get back in contention.

The next day was an early one for the three of us and it was probably the best thing that could’ve happened. The course was ours for the taking and all we had to do was be smart. Gavyn carded the best round of the tournament so far, a smooth 66, Jagre another steady 74, and I carded a bounce back at 69 putting us all comfortably inside the cutline. Not only did we consider this day a win, Gavyn and I were able to climb all the way into a tie for 3rd in the best ball competition.

Heading into the final round, it was safe to say that we all had gotten our confidence back in one way or another. August 13th was another early morning for Jagre and I whereas Gavyn had vaulted near the top of the leaderboard after his incredible performance in Round 2. As the morning wave completed their rounds, Jagre and I vaulted up the leaderboard shooting two of the morning's top scores: 71 for me ended up landing me in a tie for 12th and 75 for Jagre secured him a tie for 19th. The afternoon wave produced a mixed bag of scores including a 73 from Gavyn placing him in a tie for 4th. As a team we ended up finishing solo 2nd in the best ball competition, just one shot back of the winners. In true Bentwood fashion this tournament could best be described with 2 words: Grit and Joy.
