Last Saturday, Shawnigan Lake School made their way to Brentwood for the always keenly contested series of matches between the two schools. Dating back to 1961, when Brentwood was reopened on the present site, Brentwood and Shawnigan have enjoyed a superb rugby relationship and the players mark these dates on their calendars with a great deal of anticipation. At the Grade 9 level, the teams have met on two previous occasions. In the first match, both schools claimed victory, although there was some good-natured debate as to which school really won. In the second encounter, Shawnigan played exceptionally well on the day and ran out deserving winners, 25-10.
Last Saturday, fresh from inspiring Remembrance Day Services at their respective schools, both teams ran onto the rugby pitch in a determined mood. An absorbing and back-and-forth match followed, with both teams scoring excellent tries. With the match in the balance, Brentwood applied significant pressure on their counterparts and scored twice during the final five minutes to earn a 35-19 victory. A great team effort was highlighted by outstanding play from Santiago and Gavin. Keep an eye on this site for information about a possible Grade 9 tournament next week.
