September 14th marked the creation of the Brentwood Environmental Action Team (BEAT), with almost 20 students in attendance. This team has been developed to replace the School's Green Club. To encourage sustainability of the program, student representatives (House Stewards) will make a two-year commitment and will provide education and leadership within the residences. This initiative is being led by Laura Richardson and Dillon H (Grade 12), Assistant Head Prefect for Environmental Stewardship. Ms Richardson teaches environmental studies at the School and has been involved in green initiatives since 1990. Alistair Hardie, the former sponsor of the Green Club, is working with Ms Richardson and Dillon and teaches environmental science. The mandate of the team is to stimulate environmental action and to educate the community about the ecological and ethical implications of their daily routines. Sustainability and stewardship are the founding principles of the new team. The first major action will be the implementation of a Zero Waste initiative in the boarding houses by mid-October.
