If you visit campus on any Monday, Wednesday or Friday afternoon, you’ll see Brentwood students spread out in the Arts Building for the afternoon to take classes such as pottery, drama, debate, painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, strings, choir, musical & Model UN. But you’ll also notice a few students changing up the tempo and heading in a different direction – they’re on their way to the studio to train in ballet, tap, contemporary, hip-hop, and many other styles of dance.

Directed by Ms Amy Staples, the dance program at Brentwood is growing and improving all the time. Classes are offered at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Keen dancers are now also able to take classes outside of arts blocks on sports days, at drop in classes, and on the company team.

When asked about Brentwood Dance, Director of Arts, Ms Edna Widenmaier enthusiastically replied, “Amy Staples has grown the dance program greatly. The addition of dance as a sport - because it really is an athletic art - allows those who don’t have the time on arts days to fit dance into their schedule”.

One amazing opportunity offered by the dance program this year was the November midterm New York City trip. Students on the trip spent five days taking dance classes, watching broadway shows, and exploring the city.

Dancers get plenty of experience on the big stage at the Killy Theatre. In addition to having a number in the Concert for a Winter’s Eve show, Evening of Dance is an event in third term dedicated to dance, which the whole school attends.

For anyone reading this who is considering joining dance as an art or a sport, take the leap out of your comfort zone and sign up. “Brentwood dance is full of love. There are so many passionate and incredible dancers and it is truly like a second family to me” said Dance Captain Heather L, Mackenzie ‘23.

Ms Staples makes dance a fun and dynamic experience for athletes at every level - and we always want more boys!
