Brentwood Athletics Review – January 2016

Monday, February 15, 2016 - By: Blake Gage

It has been an action-packed month of January in Brentwood Athletics. Keeping with tradition, there has been a flurry of Showcase events including our second annual Showcase hockey game with St. George’s School. The student spirit in the arena was fantastic and the level of hockey played by both teams very strong. While Brentwood came up on the short end of an 8-4 score, the game was tightly contested until late in the third period when Saints scored a couple of beautiful goals. Nonetheless, it was a great evening for our school and it was capped off with the traditional Mackenzie House Skate which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Also in January, our Senior Girls Basketball team hosted Shawnigan Lake School in another Showcase evening. The girls game was an exciting affair and close until late in the game when the Brentwood girls dug deep, got some nice stops, and finished a couple of baskets in transition to close out the game with a comfortable win.

Despite battling all sorts of sickness and injuries, our Senior Boys are still currently ranked #7 in the province at the AA levell. Our Junior Girls Basketball team had a nice month capturing bronze at ISAs and claiming first in their Mid-Island league as well as winning the Mid-Island Championship vs Cowichan. The Junior boys have also continued to roll as they are yet to lose a game to an island opponent and also captured the Mid-Island league crown with their win over Cowichan last week.

Hockey had a very challenging and rewarding tour of Ontario and Quebec with a 6 game schedule, visits to Toronto, Ottawa and Parliament Hill and a final stop in Montreal to watch the Canadiens play Tampa Bay. The boys come back a more seasoned and capable squad ready to head into the Ross Cup Tournament Feb. 25-27.

Our Squash team showed great spirit competing at the ISA tournament at SMUS in January and they were awarded ISA bronze medals for their efforts!

Even though it is not rugby season, it is worth noting that, Avi S, Danika E, McKenna H and Denise R have all been selected to the BC Elite 7s team for 2016.

There is no question it has been an excellent start to the year. Action will heat up in February as all our basketball teams will commence their playoff runs and the hockey program will host its famous Ross Cup Tournament.
