There are classes for music enthusiasts of all skill levels at Brentwood. The Beginners’ Rock Band class is excellent for less experienced musicians who want to learn to play as a band and about the history of music. The class is taught by Mr. Scott McGill, an outstanding guitarist and vocalist who has a vast knowledge of all instruments and the path that music took to get where it is today. In the class there are many different types of people and different levels of play. Mr. McGill takes this group, consisting of students from grades nine through eleven, and pieces them together to make wonderful music. At the moment our band is playing “Day Tripper” by the Beatles, “Summer of ‘69” by Bryan Adams and the 2002 pop hit “Soak Up The Sun” by Sheryl Crow. All of these songs have a fun, high energy and are a blast to play.  On top of all of the fun playing these songs, and learning many more, we learn about how pop music has developed, changed, and grown over the years, from the music of Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash in the 1950s to Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars today. We learn about how Motown, which usually goes unrecognized when discussing the history of music, had such a big effect on the development of music to what it is today.  As we get closer to the end of the year, we get closer to the Brentwood Regatta, where the Beginner Rock Band gets to showcase its talents and hard work, Then, to top the year off, we get to go to a nearby recording studio and record three of our favourite songs.  Each class is tons of fun, whether we are playing our music or learning about the music of the past and how it has influenced the music of today.
