Every year, the BEAT enters the BC Green Games, a competition where students compete with other high schools for the honor of being named the greenest school in BC. To win, we rely on voting: student, teacher, and parent. Follow this link to vote for Brentwood! You only have to make an account and it takes 3 minutes! http://www.bcgreengames.ca/login/register.html?layout=landing The following is our Green Games Entry:
Student enthusiasm has shaped this year into a green one. It started off with a song composed for the BEAT entitled "Me Love". Through our bi-monthly meetings, the BEAT (Brentwood Environmental Action Team) continues to work hard to fulfill our motto of LEAP (Lead, Educate, Act, Progress).
The year started with the education of new students about waste management. Then, new and old students attended a local community cleanup and a hike to an old growth forest.

Our major focus of the year is the 3 R’s: Removal of broom, Recovery of eelgrass and the distribution of our garden Resources. By engaging our student body and community, a core group of students and a few community members volunteer their time to remove broom and litter from the highway. Even though it proved to be an arduous process, we've been able to get rid of a portion of the invasive species (broom) and help keep our community clean.

On the other side of the spectrum, the BEAT has also set a goal to work on the recovery of eelgrass in our area, and inform the school and our community of the advantages of eelgrass. A special guest from Sea Change informed many of our students about the importance of eelgrass. We educated our school and community with BEAT booths outside our local grocery store and at our school concerts. On the low tide days in May, we hope to continue our mapping and monitoring of eelgrass with the help of Sea Change.

The Fall 2011 garden harvest of potatoes, carrots and onions provided the first round of local food resources for soup for a school in Duncan. We hope to begin our 2012 garden activities in April with more planting of potatoes, onions and carrots, in order to continue the soup program. By intertwining the community and the student body with various activities, the BEAT has made progress with community issues as well as positively affecting our environment.
