A tremendous victory was earned by seven hard-working Brentwood rugby players at the Provincial Regional Championships at the University of British Columbia over Canada Day Weekend. Lochlan K, Rogers ‘23, Kieran Kimberley, Whittall ‘22, Trekker James, Ellis ‘23, Cooper Junger, and Corbin, Tanner and Damian Hennessy, Rogers ‘22 competed for a spot on the U18 North Island Tsunami Rugby Union team to compete in this tournament, which is the primary way of recruiting rugby players around the province to try out for the British Columbia Bears.

The boys set out on June 30th for the UBC dorms, where we would be staying throughout the tournament. After getting settled, the first matches were set on Canada Day where we would go on to beat Vancouver North and East, respectively. After the sun set and rose, it was time for two more battles. Defeating Fraser Valley East and the Thompson-Okanagan District was something to celebrate as we remained undefeated - but it did not come easy.

As we healed our injuries the night before the final matches, we were informed our undefeated record secured us the number one seed in the tournament, giving us a direct bye to the finals the next day. As pumped up as we were, we knew it was a lot to prepare for. We spent the next 16 hours physically and mentally preparing for what would come to be the biggest game of our lives.

When the time came, we suited up to kickoff against Vancouver South, in a second attempt at a Provincial Championship for the seven of us. This meant a lot to us, as we had not gained the number one spot with Brentwood at the BC Secondary School Provincials back in June. We had finished second.

Things started off in a nerve-wracking fashion, with VS taking the first try of the match, but a penalty kick, and a beautiful grubber kick to secure a try from our Captain sealed the deal on a gold medal for the Tsunami Union. We were so thankful that all of our grit paid off, and we celebrated with joy and dedicated our medals to the Brentwood lads who missed the golden feeling with the First XV.

Along with the rugby matches, we are grateful to have experienced the PRC’s lifestyle and having met so many great guys while doing it, and we are especially grateful to be coached once again by Canadian Sevens player, Sion Griffiths, Ellis ‘18.

As well as the victory, a big congratulations to Trekker, Damian and Corbin for receiving an invite to tryout for the BC Bears.

From the adventures of Cooper and Trekker’s dinos to Lochie’s questionable beach outfit, this trip will be one that no one will ever forget.
