The Brentwood senior boys basketball team squared off against Gulf Islands Senior Secondary School on Tuesday, using a stingy defensive effort to earn an important league victory. The Saltspring Island-based school presented the Brentwood players with some significant challenges, especially in the paint, where the opposition's obvious height advantage made scoring difficult. Add to this some strong outside shooting by GISS (seven 3-pointers in the second half), and the result was a highly competitve game. Early in the fourth quarter, Brentwood's lead had been pared down to 9 points, but some gritty defence by Jason Kim and Ian Parry ended the threat. In addition, Ian Parry provided a much needed offensive spark, pouring in 17 points as well as collecting five rebounds, three of them offensive. The team travels to Vancouver this weekend to defend the Independent School crown the team won last year.
