The Brentwood Musical Theatre Company presents Carousel for the 2009 season. "In 1999, Time magazine in its "Best of the Century" list, named Carousel the Best Musical of the 20th century: "...setting the standard for the 20th Century musical". Rodgers and Hammerstein said that Carousel was their favourite collaboration. They broke new ground in musical theatre story-telling with their extended music-and-dialogue scenes, such as the "bench scene" which features "If I Loved You", and the haunting "Soliloquy" in which Billy imagines his future child. Set in a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, the carefree carnival barker, Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries the naive millworker, Julie Jordan. Billy loses his job just as he learns that Julie is pregnant, and desperately intent upon providing a decent life for his family, is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and certain of a long prison term, he takes his own life and is sent "up there". Billy, allowed to return to earth for one day, encounters the teenage daughter he never knew. She is lonely and friendless, her father's reputation as a thief and bully have haunted her throughout her young life. How Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testament to the power of love.
