Athletics Update

5 February 2013
Blake Gage, Director of Athletics
It has been an action packed start to the New Year in Brentwood Athletics.  Keeping with tradition, there has been a flurry of “Showcase” events with our good friends at Shawnigan Lake School.  The rivalry between the two schools is certainly a healthy one and it has been a pleasure to watch the growing level of respect and cooperation between the two schools.  Whether it is on the ice, the field, or the hardcourt, the anticipation and excitement surrounding Brentwood/Shawnigan match ups is always at an elevated level and the students turn out in droves to watch the two sides compete.  Having the opportunity to compete in such an electric environment is truly a unique and memorable experience for our athletes.  The senior hockey team put on a terrific showing at the annual Brentwood/Shawnigan showcase event that took place on Saturday, January 26th.  The game, as usual, took place in front packed crowd with supporters of both sides creating a fantastic atmosphere.  In what was perhaps the most exciting showcase game in history, both teams were still tied at 2-2 after the end of regulation and a five minute overtime period.  Brentwood eventually prevailed in a good old fashioned shootout.  It was a fantastic night for both schools.

Basketball season is also fully underway and both the girls and boys programmes are off to excellent starts.  The senior girls surprised many by making it to the finals of their first tournament of the year at Wellington HS where Brooke L. and Tajzha D. were named as tournament all-stars.  The junior girls’ team is also off to an excellent start with wins over Chemainus, QMS, GISS & Cowichan.

On the boys side, the juniors have looked strong in their early season action and won their own tournament for the first time since its inauguration three years ago thanks to wins over Ladysmith, Collingwood and Shawnigan Lake.

The senior boys are coming off a big 65-47 win in their annual Showcase game vs. Shawnigan Lake School.  A huge crowd was on hand to watch the first Brentwood athletics webcast which seemed to be a big hit for parents and alumni around the world.  The senior boys came into the month of February ranked 4th in the provincial AA rankings and set to host the 23rd annual “Countdown to the Playoffs” tournament on Feb 1st and 2nd.  The tournament included 9 of the top 15 provincially ranked AA teams and the Senior Boys played with tremendous spirit and determination narrowly losing to provincially #1 ranked Holy Cross in overtime of the Tournament final. On the strength of this outstanding performance, Brentwood’s Senior Boys saw their ranking jump to #1 on the Island and #2 in the Province.

Even though it is not rugby season there were a couple of notable achievements.  Toby D. was selected to the BC U18 7’s team that will be competing in Las Vegas next month and Ciel A. B., at 15 years of age, was selected to the BC U18 girls 7’s team.

Our rowing club hosted Shawnigan Lake in its first annual Ergfest on Saturday, February 2nd and will be gearing up for the competitive season next month.

There is no question it has been an excellent start to the year.  Action will heat up in February as all our basketball teams will commence their playoff runs and the hockey programme will host its famous Ross Cup tournament on March 1st and 2nd.
