It has been an action-packed start to the New Year in Brentwood Athletics. In keeping with tradition, there has been a flurry of Showcase events with our good friends at Shawnigan Lake School. The rivalry between the two schools is certainly a healthy one and it has been a pleasure to watch the growing level of respect and cooperation between the two schools. Whether it is on the ice, the field, or the hardcourt, the anticipation and excitement surrounding Brentwood/Shawnigan matchups is always at an elevated level and the students turn out in droves to watch the two sides compete.
The opportunity to compete in such an electric environment is a unique and memorable experience for our athletes. The Senior Hockey team battled hard but came up short against a talented Shawnigan side in the annual Brentwood/Shawnigan Showcase event on Saturday, January 25th. The game, as usual, took place in front of a packed crowd with supporters from both sides creating a fantastic atmosphere. Despite the loss, the team competed from start to finish and the school is immensely proud of the players and coaches in our hockey program.
Basketball season is also fully underway. On the girls’ side, the Seniors have had a solid month and have secured a second place standing in league play with playoffs set to start next week. The Junior Girls Basketball team has had some excellent results and this promising group has secured the #1 seed in the mid-island and will be entering the South Island tournament with high hopes.
On the boys’ side, the Juniors have shown steady improvement throughout the year and, despite being one of the younger teams, have performed well against some of the stronger teams on the island. The Junior B team has also competed hard, and demonstrated the depth of the program. The Senior Boys are coming off a big win in their Showcase game vs. Shawnigan Lake School. A huge crowd was on hand to watch and the game webcast was a hit for parents and alumni around the world. The team is hoping for a win over local rival GISS next week which would see them capture their 6th consecutive Mid-island league title and set them up well for their playoff run.
As mentioned in the last Torch, Ciel AB, Mckenna H, Brooklyn N & Aaron H. all represented the province of British Colombia at the Las Vegas International 7’s Rugby Tournament and had, by all accounts, great tournaments. Ciel’s team won their division and Aaron was named Captain of his BC team.
On another note, Duncan H made a Junior World Cup team for trapshooting and will represent Canada in Germany in May. This is a terrific accomplishment and a big step towards making the 2016 Olympic team for Canada.
On the rowing scene, at the recent Rowing Canada annual awards, a number of Brentonians were recognized. Debbie Sage, our Head of Rowing, was elected to the Rowing Canada Board of Directors; Harold Backer and Brian Carr were both recognized for 30 years of outstanding service to the Canadian rowing community; and Elliot R was recognized as the Canadian Junior Male Sculler of the year!
There is no question that it has been an excellent start to the year.
Action will heat up in February as all of our basketball teams will commence their playoff runs and the hockey programme will host its famous Ross Cup Tournament.
