Athletics: Spring-Term Sunshine?

3 May 2022
Mr. Blake Gage, Director of Athletics
Spring has sprung and the Brentwood fields, courts, and waterfront have been flooded with a full array of sports action though the weather has yet to fully co-operate.

On the fields, our boys and girls rugby teams are rounding into form and, despite having two full years off, they are playing excellent rugby and both teams should be in the mix to earn provincial berths this month. The Senior Boys are coming off a couple of impressive wins including a win over our rivals from SMUS in April, and in 7s action the team had an excellent finish coming 4th at the Invitational Provincial Tournament. Meanwhile, our girls have split a couple of games against Island teams—defeating Port Alberni handily before losing a close battle with Vanier.

At the junior level, our boys have also made excellent progress and look to be one of the top teams on the Island despite being a fairly young and inexperienced squad.

In soccer action, our junior and senior girls teams have been battling hard in league play and both teams will be competing in their zone championships later this month.

On the courts, our tennis teams competed at the ISA Championship at the end of April—where Senior Boys earned silver and our senior girls made it to the bronze match before the event had to be cancelled due to time/weather. We will also be hosting the Island Championships in early May here on campus.

On the water, there has been a ton of excitement. Crews had their first taste of competition at a couple of local regattas in early 2022, and then stepped up in a big way to host our 50th Brentwood International Regatta April 29-May 1! While it was a “smaller” affair than usual, we still welcomed close to 700 rowers and the School was extremely excited about all the action both on and off the water.

Our golf team is also off to a busy start, and sent a message to the province when they convincingly won the ISA Golf Championship April 25. The team is poised to make a great run at provincials this month.

While our competitive teams are fun to watch, our other programs are equally vibrant and engaging. Outdoor Pursuits has provided our students with amazing opportunities as they have immersed themselves in hiking and white water kayaking. Other students have been enjoying an eclectic mix of cross-country running, climbing, cross-training, yoga, squash, jiu-jitsu, and weight lifting. The spring term is, without question, our busiest athletic time of the year. Any visitor to our school on a sports day is sure to be delighted by the activity and enthusiasm that pervades our campus. Please consider yourself warmly invited—just try to bring some sun with you!
