Athletics Review - January 2018

Tuesday, February 06, 2018 - By: Blake Gage - Director of Athletics

January has been a busy time for our competitive sports teams.

The hockey program was very active going undefeated in league play and perhaps more impressively, beating St. George’s School 5-3 for the first time in four years in our annual Showcase event. Mr Patel is very pleased to have the Saville Cup finally back in a Brentwood trophy case! Coming up next for the hockey team is their annual Ross Cup tournament which will be hosted by Brentwood February 23 and 24.

The month of January has been extremely eventful for the Senior Girls Basketball team. The girls headed off to the Archbishop Carney Tournament in early January then competed in tournaments at both Wellington and Belmont. Despite being significantly shorthanded, and sometimes having as few as six players available to play, the girls have played some nice basketball and have scraped together some impressive wins. Playing with only six has certainly improved their conditioning and they are excited for the month of February where they will compete in the Shawnigan Lake Tournament before heading into South Island and hopefully Island playoffs.

The Junior Girls Basketball team has also had a fun start to the year. After a road trip up to Comox for the Mark Isfeld Tournament, the girls came back to Victoria to win Silver at the ISA II tournament hosted by GNS. The girls have also shown well in league play and enter the upcoming Mid-Island playoff as the #2 seed.

On the boys side, the Junior A team hosted their tournament where they played excellent basketball and captured Bronze with an impressive win over a strong side from NDSS. The boys then lost an overtime thriller to Shawnigan Lake School, which, while disappointing, shows how far they have come in just 6 weeks as they had lost by over thirty to Shawnigan when they first played back in December.  The team has wrapped up second place in the Mid-Island league and, as a result, have earned a berth to the Island Championship which will take place at SLS on February 15/16/17.

Our Junior B boys have also been rocking in January. Coach Warner has an army of players that are improving at an astonishing rate. The boys have done well in league play and will be competing in the semi-finals and hopefully finals of the Mid-Island playoff this coming weekend at Duncan Christian School.

The Senior Boys team are working through one of the most challenging schedules in the province and have been enjoying their diet of top ten 4A teams. The boys had impressive tournament wins at Heritage Woods, UVic and Claremont but have come off two weekends where they were unable to close out some tough games as they finished third at the prestigious Abbotsford Snowball Tournament and 4th at the Vancouver College Tournament. The team is looking to ramp up and build momentum now as 2A playoffs and hopefully Provincials lie just around the corner. They started their final tune up with a home court tournament win as they hosted the 26th annual Countdown to Playoffs Tournament this past weekend, beating SLS in the final.

Our squash team has also been busy playing in a number of Victoria-based men’s tournaments and they captured Bronze at the ISA Tournament at SMUS.

Action only gets hotter in February as we get into playoffs and the Ross Cup – we will keep you posted on all of the results!
