Asylum Denied

24 May 2019
Alannah G. (Allard ‘20)
In our Comparative Cultures 12 class Mr. Robinson gave us an assignment to choose a cultural conflict in a different country and teach whoever we are presenting to about the conflict and ways to help fix it. He gave us the freedom to express it however we wanted. After seeing an example of a man who made a song and animation about the residential schools conflict, I decided that I also wanted to produce a song. I love writing music and I find that I learn more about topics through songs. I searched online to find a conflict and came upon a human rights violation of asylum seekers and thought this story should be heard. The story of Marjorie Ojule devastated me when I read about it and the fact that it happened to thousands and thousands of other people made it even worse. Asylum seekers are something that not very many people are talking about and I hoped to shine some light and share the information with my peers. I finished the song but thought that if people could read what the story was about through the lyrics that it would make more of an impact.
