Assassins Among Us

Over the past few weeks, in various houses at Brentwood, people have become enemies, people have become friends, people have been victims, people have been perpetrators, people have trusted, people have been lied to, people have lost, people have won, people have lived, and people have died - figuratively speaking of course. In short, Brentwood’s students and staff have faced some of the scariest times of their lives: they have watched their beloved school turn into a bloodbath. They have discovered there are assassins among us.

Before you pull your children from this dangerous school of murderers, or contact the Shawnigan Lake RCMP, you should know that this is simply a game. Assassins is a Brentwood tradition among houses, but it seems that this year almost all the houses are playing simultaneously. Basically, each player is given a clothes pin at the start of the game and on it is their target’s name. Players try to pin their target’s clothes before their own assassin kills them. There are safe zones throughout the school including bathrooms, classrooms and cafeteria, but beyond that, it is free reign. Linking arms with a fellow player means you're safe, but beware, they could betray you at any point.

Not only Hope House playing this vicious game. Allard and Rogers are doing a brother-sister house battle to the death. Chloe C, Allard ‘21 says that “From the first kill about 20 minutes after it started, to wild chases across the field, Assassins has been vicious”. Mack has shown their true colours in their game: red (as in blood). Even Alex House is killing for sport. Privett has not let us down in their slaughter house: “Assassins exposes the true murderous intentions of its players” comments Ankit B, Privett ‘21. “The Privett boys have disregarded friendships and are killing with zero remorse”. The campus is a battlefield.

Ms Legassicke took on the role of organizing Hope House Assassins. She sends out nightly emails with a long list of the fallen, and she has redistributed the pins more than once. Currently, there are only three students left in Hope: Caleigh HM Michaela DCG, and Julia N. None of them will go down without a fight. Despite Mr DeSandoli’s email offering a reward to whomever takes down Michaela, she remains alive and thirsty for blood. Ms Legassicke explains that she has always found that assassins “leads to those who don’t usually spend time together, crossing their paths constantly, leading to many fun exchanges”. In a year filled with so many obstacles and uncertainties, this seems like a perfect way to “bring some fun to the house for the students and staff.”

There have been many highlights throughout the game in Hope House including screams down the hallways and desperate attempts to flee. Ms Legassicke notes that “Watching Ms Hedquist lock herself in a glass office during the class break in order to not get clipped by Adrienne” was very entertaining. See photo right. I personally enjoyed when Ms Hedquist started using her water bottle as a defence mechanism, i.e. throwing water at Adrienne R. Basically, anything involving Ms Hedquist was worthwhile watching … like when she murdered me in the hallways of Hope.

As Brentwood students die, one after another (figuratively of course), we mourn the fallen. Yet students persist with grit as they continue to defend themselves and kill until they are the only ones left standing. To those who are still alive, may the odds be ever in your favour. To those who have passed, it is a far, far better thing that you do, than you have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that you go to than you have ever known.
