Arts Update
Our dynamic Arts programmes are thriving on campus despite the dull weather. In the new Centre for Arts and Humanities, students are busy painting, sculpting, photographing and potting for upcoming shows and AP Studio Art submissions. The inspiring, parent and alumni supported facilities and state of the art equipment have attracted many students.
The photography studio now benefits from three adjacent developing rooms essentially making the programme weather proof, so students are able to shoot indoors regardless of what is happening outside for light. The Morgan Laycock Memorial Photography Collection is now housed in the Centre and each year the work of the prizewinner for Outstanding Nature Photographer will have their work added. In the Pottery Studio, students and staff have benefitted from the focus afforded by the blessings of the new silent pottery wheels.
One of the projects now being completed is a record of a musical number from the upcoming "In The Heights", which will be put on display during the show. New high-tech equipment in the Sculpture Studio, means three-dimensional relief work can be accomplished. The movable easels in the two painting and drawing studios enable our visual artists to work with different lighting levels, while the AP Studio Art candidates have their own spaces to prepare their concentrations for College Board credit. The remarkable creative achievements of all of these programmes may be viewed in the beautiful atrium gallery in the Centre.
A short hop over to the T. Gil Bunch Centre finds the performing arts groups rehearsing for external festivals and our own showcases.
Individually, in Dance, Rebecca M. achieved Distinction for her Royal Academy of Dance Grade 6 exam, while Caitlin W. received Merit for the same. The Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Concert Choir are practicing their scales and harmonies for the 41st annual invitation only MusicFest “The Nationals” competition as they go for the gold in Toronto. In the drama studio, the Senior Acting company is preparing Bel Kaufman’s "Up The Down Staircase" for opening on April 17th. On the Killy Stage, the Musical Theatre company rehearsals for the Tony award winning show "In The Heights" are in full swing. Opening to the public and parents on March 5 and running through Saturday, March 9, this is an upbeat fast-paced modern show about family and home, set in Washington Heights, New York City. Tickets can be purchased on-line at http://www.brentwood.bc.ca/booking or phone the box office at 250-743-8756 from 10am to 1pm.
All of these artistic spaces can be visited on our “Arts in Action” afternoon Friday, May 3 from 2-4:30pm. You will be able not only to visit the studios and rehearsals but also have some hands on experiences at the easel or at the wheel!
