It is difficult to summarize the impact the Student Activity Council has on the Brentwood community since it is so welcoming and all-encompassing: it touches the hearts of all students and staff in different ways. Beginning with this year’s first COVID-sanctioned event, the SAC Games and Movie Night welcomed new and returning students to campus, reminding the kitchen services team how much food it is possible for a few hundred excited teenagers to consume, and kicking the year off to a fun and unique start.

Spearheaded by our two inspiring leaders, Staff Sponsor Ms McLean and Captain Olivia Sasse, Mack ‘21, the SAC has successfully organized more events than any previous year, and far more than could ever be expected when working within COVID guidelines. “We were able to do many of the traditional SAC events with some adaptations, and a record number of Interhouse events - many for the first time. Flag Football, Soccer Skills, Dodgeball, Cross Country Running Relay, Rap Battle, Cornhole, Spike Ball, BEAT Relay, and Dance Revolution were all first-time events this year” says Ms McLean, highlighting quite an impressive list of memorable activities that the Brentwood community was so fortunate to enjoy.

Proof of the SAC’s vast impact and accomplishments can be seen in graduating students’ “Memories” paragraphs in the Yearbook, scrolls of pictures in students’ camera rolls and on the Brentwood SmugMug page, and most importantly, in the countless smiles and new friendships formed at Interhouse and SAC events. “We found a way to overcome, and overachieve in giving campus life its former glory, while giving the countless events the usual chaos, fun and memorablity that makes out the SAC” says Anna D, Allard ‘22, defining what it means to be a part of this exceptional extracurricular.

18 International Dinners later, all SAC volunteers and executive members can look back on events like Fright Week, Polar Bear Swim, Java Hut, Spring Fair and the first and only ever Grad Camp-In - thanks to Mr Sullivan and the Grad Council - and not only be proud of our accomplishments, but grateful to have had the opportunity to celebrate and socialize on campus, when so many other things have had to be downsized or virtualized.

The final SAC event of the year, and Ms McLean’s farewell performance went off with a colorful bang, as pictured in the color war that was one of the activities making up Brentwood’s first ever Fun in the Sun Fair, complete with food eating contests, three-legged and potato sack races, and hula-hoop competitions. The SAC and the entire school community is in great debt to the incredible woman who has led the charge in Interhouse, SAC, and Tennis for many years, and given us countless memories and good times that have enriched our Brentwood experience. We hope this cheerful event was a worthy send-off for our wonderful Ms McLean, and a hearty welcome to the incoming SAC Queen Ms Ramsay!

Also being whisked away to new things is Olivia Sasse who excelled in determination and commitment as the 2020-21 SAC Captain. “This year has been one of overcoming obstacles, finding creative solutions, and being persistently optimistic” she says, now relieved of her duties she is excited to pass down the torch to the next SAC Captain, Anna D. “I am confident they, along with Ms Ramsay, will do an incredible job restoring the Brentwood fire to the students' spirits.”

One last thank you and last words go to Ms McLean to whom we are so grateful. “Although this year has been challenging, it is the spirit of the students at Brentwood that I will remember. For each SAC and Interhouse event, they brought such innovative ideas, such energy, and such fun. It has been an exciting, crazy and exhausting ride being involved in the SAC and Interhouse, and I am sure Ms Ramsay will continue to add to the fun and excitement.”

This article is dedicated to all members and volunteers of the SAC, Captain Olivia Sasse & Ms McLean.
