An Evening of Dance

As the Brentwood year comes to an end, art shows and performances are in abundance. One of these came to the students and staff last night, May 7th, in the form of a beautiful dance show. As the students gathered in their common rooms to enjoy the show, the Evening of Dance began.

Some art shows such as this revolve around a theme; in this case, the chosen subject was “Wave.” The pieces displayed this wonderfully, utilizing a lovely combination of flow and tempo to blend the idea of waves into their choreography. As Aiden F said to me after the show: “I’ve never really watched dance; it made me appreciate the art of movement a lot more”. I second that wholeheartedly. There was a considerable amount of variance and individuality to each performance to compliment this theme, and the nearly hour-long show offered countless diverse tones.

Comprising a mixed cast of beginner, intermediate and advanced dancers, each performance was memorable and entertaining. Between jazz, contemporary and hip hop influenced or styled numbers, a wide range of skills presented themselves impressively on stage as the exemplary backstage participants helped tremendously to bring every piece together. The emotions of these dances ranged from heartfelt and despairing to cheerful and lively, highlighting the broad scope of adaptability the dancers have.

Not only were these performances tonally spectacular, but the athleticism required to perform the choreography should not be underestimated. As the boys in Privett sat and watched a solo performance that included several acrobatic feats, remarks included “Woah, that’s really impressive”. This sentiment was undoubtedly shared among the viewers, as the countless pirouettes and leaps fluttered on screen.

Regrettably, we cannot view these in person, as they are infinitely more impressive when compared to sitting in a common room where there may or may not be enough space to sit comfortably. It is remarkable that the leaders of this event and many others were able to put on such a fantastic show with the covid limitations they have. We at Brentwood are grateful to have the privilege of viewing them.
