An Atypical Saturday Night 1

19 January 2021

No snow? No problem. On Saturday December 12, Snowball was held throughout the Brentwood campus. Snowball was yet another event that required adjustments due to Covid-19, but it was still quite the night to remember.

Covid forced everyone to stay in cohorts, but by now we’re used to this - so no surprise. Each cohort had a different schedule, nevertheless everyone experienced the same night. The schedule consisted of a spectacular magic show in the Killy, an artwork Showcase in Arts, fine dining in Crooks Hall, and, of course, a photo-op in the Foote Centre.

The magic show, hosted by Murray Hatfield, was no let down. The magician had the crowd in awe for the entire performance, from making bowling balls fall out of paper, to mind boggling sock matching tricks with the help of the audience, to intense card tricks. He would often get help from audience members which made the entire experience more engaging. The audience just couldn’t get enough of the magic. Sophia L, Allard ‘22, thoroughly enjoyed the night and “was left wondering how on earth he did it!” Well Sophia, a magician never reveals their secrets …

The art show was new and spectacular. Instead of the walls of Arts featuring student pieces, they were holding beautiful art by distinguished Canadian painter and printmaker David Blackwood. Thanks to former parent and Governor, Richard Osler, for loaning us his collection. Students work was also shown, with their art set up in the studios.

Each student was greeted by delectable chocolate croissants and steamy hot chocolate as they entered the building, so everyone was able to enjoy the art with something to nibble on as they wandered through the halls and studios. Ramona J, Alex ‘22, is “so grateful [she] got to enjoy such captivating works of art. It really pulled the night together.”

Each cohort was eager for the meal that they would enjoy in Crooks Hall. The dining hall had many decorations so it felt like a winter wonderland as soon as you walked in. There was a buzz of excitement in the air as everyone gobbled up the dinner provided by the food services staff, and the meal was completed with Snowball themed cupcakes, truly delicious!

Taking photos was something that everyone was looking forward to, but the thought of hiking to the Foote Centre in high heels and tuxedos in the chilly weather was something that nobody thought would be enjoyable. Luckily, buses (the interior decorated with mesmerizing blue lights) were organized to pick everyone up and chauffeur us to the Foote. The Foote Centre was decorated up and downstairs to maximize the places for photos, and everyone utilized the elegant backdrops. Everyone was able to get professional photos done by Mr Pettit, Mr Minckler, Ms Bell-Etkin & Mr Ganley and many students also took photos with their friends using their own devices. Everyone looked very cheery and bright!

The entire night was a huge success, and never could have been done without the hard work of Ms Stevens, Ms Legassicke, Grad President Jocelyn P, everyone on Grad Council, the food services, maintenance, and every volunteer who made this night possible. Thank you very much on behalf of everyone who attended Snowball 2020 - The Pandemic Edition!
