Each year, many new faces fill the homey halls of Alex House, bringing a new culture and energy. This past year, we were fortunate enough to welcome over 20 students who started as strangers but ended as family.
Although the culture changes a little each year, traditions remain a huge part of what makes Alex special. As in past years, we have collectively partaken in bowling, skating, movie outings, the Polar Bear Swim, Assassins, our “best of the 2000s” Open House, and birthday parties; many of these were alongside our brother house, Whittall. Along with old traditions, new ones were created, such as our trip to the Flying Squirrel trampoline park. Our Grade 12s also organized in-house breakfasts, which were very popular with the girls.
Each and every member of our house plays an important role in keeping each day running smoothly. Grade 9s bring life and energy, Grade 10s help to connect the age difference, Grade 11s are entertaining, and the Grade 12s are strong leaders. Even with the contributions each student and duty staff member makes, Maisy, our inspirational Houseparent, keeps us on our toes. Even after 25 years of Houseparenting, she brings life to the house that is irreplaceable. We are terribly sad that this is her last year, but wish her all the best in the years to come. Losing Mrs Mais leaves a huge hole in the house that will most definitely be filled by Mrs Warner, with the help of her two children, Finley and Sullivan - and Mr Warner. Although it will be different, every member of our family believes in what the house will become with the guidance of Mrs Warner, our new Houseparent, and Ms Sarah Hall, who will also be joining us as our new Assistant Houseparent.
Although at the end of the year some will return and others will find themselves on a new path, the friendships and bonds created in Alex over the course of the year will last for a lifetime. I wish everyone luck wherever life leads, and I will miss all of you!
