What do you think is in every Prefect’s recent search history? “How to tie a tie”? No. “How to put a Grade 9 to bed”? No. “How to avoid ‘senioritis’”? Close, but no. The answer is “Open House theme ideas”!

For many Alex House Prefect meetings, the impending Open House was a subject of much trepidation and discord. No one could come up with an idea that we all unanimously agreed upon, and as we all started to run out of themes, Open House concepts became more wacky (we almost went through with “Retirement Home”). However we were finally able to come to a consensus of an Open House that would be cute, cozy, and comfortable: Slumber Party!

“The theme was so comfortable and cute that everyone wanted to dress up and partake in the celebration. The slushies were delicious,” said Sam D, Alexandra ‘23, “and, as a bonus, everyone could just jump into bed after the open house!”.

In addition to the fun theme, there were plenty of other attractions to entice students to attend. Instead of the usual sodas that are typically served at other Open Houses, in Alex we served two delicious flavours of ice-cold slushies (“Melon-tonin” and “Blue raZzz”).

What’s more, we set up a photo booth for students to document the memories with their friends, and there was a mosh pit with great music going all night (many students go to mosh with the intention of repeating the floor-breaking incident from a few years ago… Please don’t let that be you! We Alex Girls love our common room).

Houseparent Ms Jenna Warner thought the Open House was a complete success, stating, “It was a great night and the house was full of energy. The slushies and pizza were appreciated by the students, and the students came dressed in some nice pajamas”.

Another appeal of Alex Open House which sets it apart from other Open Houses is the history behind it. It is the oldest building on campus and the first girls’ house, and for many students, the Open House is their only opportunity to explore this charming and homey historical landmark. Mackenzie House Captain Beluchi O  ‘23 said, “I really enjoyed being able to explore one of the most historic buildings on campus. You can really feel the sisterhood the Alex girls always talk about. Alex Open House is an open house I will definitely remember”.

Although preparing for an Open House can be a stressful ordeal, all the Alex House members lived up to their name and came together to put on a memorable event that the whole school could enjoy. Alex House has a special quality of friendship and family, which I think anyone walking into the Open House would be able to feel.
