September 2021 was quite an eventful time for Alex House as we welcomed a handful of new girls into our loving home. Orientation went by fast and after a series of Interhouse events and Alex-Whittall bonding sessions, the 24 new girls found their places within the house. Orientation was an amazing experience but the week was quickly over and the classic Brentwood experience we all know and love began.

Alex House alone is just a small house with “lots of character”: it is the people who make it a safe and caring home. Our house sees girls come and go every year and this changes the feeling of the house - but that is not a bad thing. Alex makes sure to keep up with the traditions of skating, bowling, in-house breakfasts, snapping, and delicious meals at the Cow Bay Cafe. Along with these old traditions, new ones are made every year such as Mario Kart competitions, Just Dance parties, and hangouts in the new kitchen.

Every girl in the house brings such a presence to our home: our Grade 8s never being in bed on time, our 9s who always seem to be on the run; our 10s who sign in JUST on time, our 11s who bring humour to the house meetings, and the amazing Grade 12 leaders who hold the house together.

Alex is also blessed with an incredible group of duty staff who support us and make our home feel more welcoming. Unfortunately, Ms Mais who is our Thursday night duty staff and the former Alex Houseparent will be leaving this year after working here for 28 years. Maisy is an incredible woman who will be tremendously missed as she was always there to support us. We are also blessed to have Mrs Warner who has been an unbelievable Houseparent for the past three years and can handle her own family as well as the house. Working with Mrs Warner as the Assistant Houseparent, we are lucky to have Mrs Langer who is one of the most genuine people I have ever met. This duo has brought so much joy and excitement to our home and I can not thank them enough for everything they have done for the house.

Goodbye Alex House. Thank you for being my home away from home for the past three years; I will cherish every memory and all of the friendships. I will miss the bunk beds, small closets, little boy blue and the scary dungeon with the mouse traps. Thank you for everything and wishing you all the best.

Lots of Love, Justine Cox, House Captain, Alex ‘22
