Abuzz About the Spelling Bee

7 June 2012

Among the many events that occur at Brentwood, last Friday's Spelling Bee was a truly amusing one. Amidst the chattering of the crowd, the glaring lights, and the nervous laughter of the contestants sitting on stage, the level of anticipation was high and everybody was eager to commence.
Each grade lasted a few rounds and there was a death match between the last two spellers. As the Bee went on, the dwindling numbers startled everyone. The nerve-wracking atmosphere, the pressure of the audience, and the microphone clearly rattled the contestants. Also, they had only 30 seconds to spell a word: this was mind-boggling. To lighten up the mood, however, surprise guest spellers were chosen from the audience and invited on stage. This served as a calming distraction for the ever-so-jittery spellers, not to mention the funny coincidence that every word's origin was Norwegian. This brought a smile to everyone's face.
It was a truly entertaining and joyful night. Congratulations to the winners: Jiwon K (Grade 9), Carolyn B (Grade 10), and Juan Q (Grade 11). For all those who didn't come watch this year's Spelling Bee, go to next year's. It's an experience you don't want to miss!
