A Well Needed Wellness Conference

18 November 2021

Boarding at Brentwood puts responsibility on us students which must be carried out every day. This responsibility, when juggling academics, athletics, and arts can be quite demanding at times. In an effort to shed light on the importance of stress management and mental health, a recent initiative to give students a break was put forward: Wellness Conference. An extended sleep in, and an activity (or two) of choice are what the day consisted of.

Kayaking, horseback riding, pie-baking, hiking, mental health workshops, drumming and conflict management workshops are only a handful of the extensive list of activities offered. B-Well, a student-driven group on campus trained in the subject of mental health, were key to the success of the day. Of course, none of these activities would have been made possible without the hard work of Ms Murray, who leads B-Well.

Fortunate enough to be B-Well members, Kameel A and I had the privilege of organizing a men’s mental health workshop aimed at destigmatizing mental health, as well as a second workshop welcoming all. What was special about these workshops was that the professional we had come in was fellow Brentonian and Rogers House alum Cameron G, Class of 2009. Cameron spoke on personal experiences he’s had dealing with patients of his with regards to mental health. Attendees all left with valuable tools to help deal with stress and their well-being.

One who attended board games, Will P, Whittall ‘22 enthused “It was a great opportunity to recharge and to have some fun.” Hannah W, Hope ‘22 was thrilled “to make yummy fresh apple pie” and thought “the energy of the day was amazing.” Our first Wellness Conference of the year has added to the positive atmosphere on campus thus far. With winter approaching achingly quickly, there is no denying that we students are anticipating our next special Wednesday.

One last thing - thank you, Ms Murray!
