A Third of the Way There

As the 2021-22 Brentwood experience is now reaching the two and a half month mark, Term 1 sport is officially coming to an end. The weather is starting to take a turn for the worse making this the perfect time for many students to make the transition from outdoor to indoor athletics. The stomping of cleats on Brentwood’s fields will soon turn to the squeaking of shoes inside the spectacular Foote Athletic Centre.

Competitive Cross Country Running, Junior Boys Rugby, Boys Soccer, Girls Field Hockey and Girls Volleyball seasons were enjoyed along with many other of Brentwood’s athletic offerings for the opening term.

All but the Senior A Volleyball team’s season is over as they will take part in provincials in early December. Captain of Senior A Volleyball, Jocelyn L, Mackenzie ‘22 says “We are super stoked about qualifying for provincials. We will be training hard over the next few weeks like we have been all season, so we are ready to compete at our best.”

In what was a highly successful season already, Senior Soccer captured Gold at the AA Provincial Championships on Tuesday. Captain Sebastian M, Privett ‘22 says “The team has shown a lot of competitiveness so far this season. Of course we are chasing success, but by focusing on learning and playing with grit, the pieces have just fallen in place by themselves.”

First 11 Field Hockey took home Bronze at Provies earlier this month which was reflected upon by Rory P, Mackenzie ‘22 as the cherry on top of what was a “great, successful season” and XC Running qualified eight athletes for the Provincial mudfest on the Mainland. Runner Eamon R, Privett ‘22 recalls the final run as “Fun, but very messy.” Shout out to Luise H, Hope ‘24 who was a member of both teams.

Among the other Term 1 sport offerings at Brentwood this year were basketball, climbing, cross training, ice hockey, jiu jitsu, outdoor pursuits, rowing, squash, tennis, and yoga.

Head of Brentwood’s Athletics Department, Mr. Gage, says that, “Term 1 was maybe my favorite term ever for sport at Brentwood. Having gone through a full year with heavy Covid restrictions, it was wonderful to see students having so much fun together in sport, particularly the competitive teams. I am super excited for what lies ahead in T2!”

Along with Mr. Gage, I and many more are looking forward to seeing what the winter term of sport has in store!
