A Summery Summary from Prague: Czech This Out!

This summer, I was one of a lucky few who were given the opportunity to travel to one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Prague, Czech Republic, to represent the school at two tournaments. I was one of ten students accompanied by two incredible teachers, Ms. MacInnis and Mr. Bryant, and the trip ran from July 11th to July 27th. Our first tournament was the Heart Of Europe Debate Tournament in Olomouc, an international-level competition where we faced off against teams from all over the world. The countries represented included South Africa, Denmark, Mexico, Peru, and Indonesia, as well as many others, and, forty teams took part. One of our teams, Brentwood A (Morgan W, John E & Afyz M) advanced through the eight preliminary rounds, octo-finals and, ultimately, the quarter-finals where they debated against Denmark’s national team before a large, and animated, audience. The debates were live-streamed and followed by debaters all over the world, including members of Brentwood’s debate club. The second tournament we attend was the World Scholar’s Cup Global Round, which features debates, a rigorous test, and trivia events. Participants represented twenty-five different countries, creating a very diverse group. The cup wasn't all about the serious academic parts of things all the time, though! The tournament began with a scavenger hunt all around Prague and we were teamed with kids from different countries, which made for an awesome adventure. There was also a dance that definitely got our blood pumping. Brentwood performed exceptionally well in the tournament, with David M, John E & Afyz M placing fourth overall. Two of our top-performing teams have also qualified to compete at the Tournament of Champions at Yale University in November, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The trip was amazing, and we struck the perfect balance between work and play. We bonded with our teammates, and with people from all around the world! It was definitely worth giving up a couple weeks of my summer break, and I would do it a hundred times over if I could. Maya J, ‘19
