A Snowball to Remember

9 January 2023

On December 10, 2022 - the last Saturday before Winter Break - the campus was bright with holiday spirit as students buttoned up blazers and zipped up dresses to attend the long-awaited event, Snowball. As the clocks neared five, the girls strapped on their heels and wobbled out to meet their suited, and suitable, dates.

The thing that separates Snowball from other formal dances/dinners, lies in its tradition of bonding the senior and junior students by sharing a meal and enjoying an evening together. From the second Brentwood’s gates open and Orientation begins, the race to find a Snowball date commences: some even plan years in advance.

This elegant evening is hosted by the Grad Class Council and Ms Ramsey and dates back to its founder Mrs Beth Melhuish - an individual who is also honoured in her legacy by the English Department’s Melhuish competitions. Mrs Melhuish first suggested the idea of juniors asking seniors to bring the student body together and celebrate the holidays. Since then, the students have done well to carry this  tradition and her legacy forward.

As we reach Winter Break, this two week period is known for assignments and tests to Snowball. For Grade 12s it is also the time to face university application deadlines. However, the evening of Snowball allows all students to blow off steam and take the time to step back and reflect on the times they have enjoyed together and the time they have left. It is so refreshing to see new faces and talk to people you may usually not get the chance to meet during this busy time of year. This is what makes this occasion so special - this year was no exception.

After greeting their dates, admiring one another’s outfits, and settling into their seats, table numbers were drawn for groups to take pictures and get dinner. This year, the entree options were between chicken parmesan, steak, and of course a variety of dietary specific options. Davis P, Whittall ‘23 remembers the chicken as “melt-in-your-mouth” and “especially drool-worthy”. Mrs Ramsey notes, “It seems that Brentwood’s Food Services team is able to achieve the impossible and outdo themselves every year”, which is a statement we wholeheartedly agree with. Once the nervous excitement died down, and plates were cleared, the students made their way to the Killy Theatre to become entranced by this year’s hypnotist.

Since Covid in 2019, this was our first year welcoming back the hypnotist. Despite this uncertainty, 20 brave volunteers unhesitantly lept up on stage to hand over the reins of their consciousness to this mystery man. The audience watched in awe as their peers drove rocket ships, performed concerts, and dropped into deep sleeps all within 30 minute spans. When asked of her experience being hypnotized, Katie L, Mack ‘24 recalls “I honestly don’t remember a whole lot other than feeling really relaxed and happy.”

Snowball 2022 was a huge success and an evening in which new friendships flourished. Thank you to Mrs Ramsey, the Grad Council, SAC, the Food Services team, parent volunteers, and everyone else who made Snowball 2022 come to life. This year’s event was truly one to remember.
