A Sea to Sky Performance

9 May 2017

This past weekend, the Brentwood Wind, Jazz, and String Ensembles travelled to Whistler for three exciting days of practice and performance. Tension was high as bands from all over Canada and BC flew in to compete in this event. In the end, all three bands scored a Silver medal for their outstanding concerts.  After an early wakeup, a cold departure on BC Ferries, and a hour on the scenic Sea to Sky highway, we arrived in Whistler.  The groups were lead by Mr Clausen, Ms Widenmaier, and Mr Newns in each respective band. The ensembles was judged by an adjudicator, who, after our performances, gave us a lesson, and critiqued us on our musical skills. Every adjudicator was upbeat, positive, and effective in giving her or his feedback to the groups. The Jazz Band’s lofty performance at high altitude has even secured us a seat at Nationals in the West Coast Jazz Festival on May 1 and 2, 2018! Once all of the playing was over, we explored the village, buying delicious treats and hilarious souvenirs to hang in our dorms. In the evening, most of us went down to the pool for a swim, or relaxed in the hot tub under the stars. After a lovely trip of music and food, everyone hopped back on the bus and travelled home, sleepy and content with a wonderful weekend of musical adventure. Jeremy H, Rogers ‘19
