A Note from the Governors

27 June 2013
Mr. Bruce Homer, Governor
On behalf of the Board of Governors, I extend a warm welcome to parents, grandparents, great grandparents, family, friends and relatives. I also welcome back past faculty and staff, especially former Heads Andrea Pennells and Bill Ross.  The Board of Governors is comprised of parents, past parents and alumni. We meet regularly to make decisions on various Governance matters – it’s interesting, fun and a privilege to serve such a great school.  As a Board, the most important decision we make is the choosing of our Head of School. Remarkably, this has been done only four times since 1962. It’s an enviable record and attests to both the wisdom of past Boards and the fortitude of past Heads. As you all know, Bud Patel has taken on the mantle, and I speak for both the Board and the entire Brentwood community in thanking him for an outstanding year.  At the close of his first year of leadership, I can safely say that he has ensured the continuity of exceptional leadership that has characterized the School's 51 years in Mill Bay. It’s been a seamless and symbiotic transition – Bud has embraced the community and the community has embraced Bud. Thank you, Mr. Patel, for a stellar year #1 at Brentwood College.   And behind every great leader there’s always great support, so thank you too, Wendy, we are so glad to have you in the Brentwood family.  One more thing, Mr. Patel - how you manage to know the name of every single person on campus in beyond me! And you did this in record time! That’s truly amazing.  All of you have seen and many will have toured the new Centre for Art and Humanities. It’s important to mention that this unparalleled facility is made possible by the commitment of our many generous donors. I wish to convey the Board’s sincere gratitude for this incredible leadership and ongoing support, and also to the Parent Committee under the leadership of Mrs. Kelly Bradley for their efforts on the Annual Campaign which once again this year raised over half a million dollars.   Now, to the reason we are here – the students. From Grades 9 to 12, you young men and woman have excelled in so many areas that the list is too long to mention. But more than that, you have all contributed to the unique atmosphere at Brentwood. It’s hard to put into words - but joy, compassion and determination all come to mind when describing the feeling when you walk onto this campus. Thanks to each and every one of you for making this happen.  And to the graduates – Congratulations. You have made it! There will be challenges in the future, but you are well prepared to face them with all that you have learned at home with your families, and during your time, here, with the Brentwood Family.  By taking Brentwood’s values away with you and living your life by them, you will set an example for others to follow. You are the leaders of tomorrow.  Safe travels and we wish you the very best in the years ahead. Please join me in a round of applause for the exceptional students of the Class of 2013. Mr. Bruce Homer, Governor
