A Double for the Senior Boys Rugby

2 June 2009

After breaking a 39-year drought with a provincial championship victory last year, the Brentwood 1st XV has once again won the BC High School Provincial Championship. And again this year, our boys dominated every stage of the tournament. They won their first game against Sir Charles Tupper of Vancouver, 93-3. In the quarter-final Esquimalt High School became the second victim to our extremely exciting and potent attacking game, and fell 53-3. The semi-final against Collingwood proved to be much more treacherous as the boys trailed at half-time 14-12 before turning up the heat and powering away with 19 unanswered points in the second half and a 31-14 victory. The final pitted Brentwood College against rival Rockridge High School from West Vancouver. Only two years ago Rockridge and Brentwood met in the final that was eventually won by Rockridge. Last year, the boys avenged the championship defeat with a resounding 61-0 victory over the same Rockridge. They were certainly seeking to overturn the recent trend with an upset victory of their own and proved difficult to manoever in the first half where Brentwood could only muster a 5-0 lead. Ultimately, however, the speed and the quality of the Brentwood attack was far too much for Rockridge as the Brentwood 1st XV powered to a final score of 29-0 and a second provincial championship. Throughout the tournament, the team's play was defined by passing and movement. All 28 of our players made strong contributions to each of the wins. Special mention should be made, however, for Michael Shenker, André Coquillard, Paul Bosco, Nick Philippson and, our selection to the Comissioner's XV, Stan Heunis, as the extremely high quality of their play led the way to our ulitimate championship victory.
