A Discussion of Politics

7 April 2022
Gavyn K, Privett ‘22
Students enrolled in Political Studies 12 taught by Ms Cuk evaluate the history, purpose, and impacts of political systems and ideologies in many countries around the world - including Canada. We evaluate issues at the municipal, provincial, national, and international levels of political problems and assess relationships between these issues. Students are encouraged to enroll in Political Studies 12 to get an understanding of what AP Comparative Government and Politics 12 will be like.

Throughout this year specifically, we have studied how power and authority demonstrated by leaders can affect how a country is developed and treated. We have also studied an article written by a Brentwood Alumni, Wade Davis ‘71, Turn  titled “Is Democracy Dying”. It talks about how, potentially, world and country leaders may distance themselves from a democratic type of government. We have also had the opportunity to choose what political party, group, or event we would like to study. This has led to descriptive, sophisticated, and detailed presentations, written responses, and brochures.

“In Political Studies 12 students will take a deep dive into politics, not only in Canada, but all around the world, through class discussions, written responses, and presentations” states Ms Cuk. “We learn a lot in this class” mentions Sajeev S Whittall ‘22. “Although this class hits many different topics, it keeps students interested and engaged.

The strong majority of students enrolled in this class are motivated. Power structures, elections and electoral systems, the role of mass media, Indigenous and international governance are all things Political Studies 12 will potentially look into in the next few months before summer break.
