A Dinner To Remember

30 September 2018
Areeb S, Rogers ‘20
At Brentwood we encompass divergent cultures and foster a multicultural society where we all celebrate our diverse traditions and our different mores. A recent event celebrating this was the Saudi Dinner on September 26, 2018. This dinner encompassed 23 Saudi students preparing and serving food for the follow Brentwood students. Just hours before the dinner was served, there was a photo shoot for Saudi students. The Saudi student body is significant in Brentwood. Brentwood fosters multiple opportunities for all cultures and widely accepts all backgrounds of ethnicities.  The Saudi dinner is a meal where expats who are situated in Saudi share their disparate experiences through disseminating the county’s culture with experiences, camaraderie and food. There were bright lights that scintillated on the tables and brilliant music that filled the atmosphere of children exploring the multifarious Saudi culture. I asked some fellow students about their experience and Jeronimo Z, Rogers ‘22 said, “ I can’t believe that the food in Saudi is so good!” I am a Saudi expat and believe that the country exhibits a bright culture that was widely depicted in our Saudi dinner. The food served included lamb, Saudi champagne, falafel, and hummus with kabsa. The food was succulent and elegantly prepared by our home Brentwood cooks! Everybody enjoyed the time spent in the dinner and left with complimentary remarks. The room was filled with decorations of pine trees and janamaz (carpet) exemplifying the beauty of the country. Rogers house captain Ian, Rogers ‘19 said “The Saudi dinner is a great way for kids to interact and share their experience.”  Brentwood is an environment that promotes all students from different countries and gives opportunities to celebrate each other’s cultures, and this is essential because like Proust stated “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” Areeb S, Rogers ‘20
