A Culture of Care

13 May 2014

A few weeks back, Ms. Dalrymple, one of our newest faculty members, circulated a link to a blog that hit home. As you know, while we are extremely proud of all sorts of strings of the Brentwood guitar, it is the safe, caring environment that sets us apart. That care comes from a variety of sources – our house parents, faculty, nursing staff, food services team, laundry group, etc. The peer-to-peer support at Brentwood is also remarkable. Chase Mielke’s (the author of the blog Ms. Dalrymple pointed me to) has a notion of care that is clearly wrapped into our two core values – Grit and Joy.  More often than not, there are no short cuts to preparing for a test, training for a rugby match, or rehearsing a dance routine. It really comes down to hard work. The joy, of course, comes from accomplishing a challenging task and perhaps pushing yourself a bit more that you previously thought. Brentwood teachers play the role of mentor which is part 'hug' and part ‘nudge'. I encourage you to read Mielke’s piece and I thank Ms. Dalrymple for bringing us back to our core purpose – to care about young people. http://affectiveliving.wordpress.com/2014/03/08/what-students-really-need-to-hear/ Mr. Bud Patel, Head of School
