A Biological Expedition Through the Bamfield Marine Sciences Center!

This year the AP Biology 12 and AP Environmental Science 12 students will get opportunities to enrich their designated curriculum and comprehend content in real-life situations. Opportunities like this include the Bamfield Marine Sciences Center where students performed labs and experiments on ecology in divergent biomes. We left school on September 15 and surveyed the ecosystem and performed real-life applications like professional scientists. During the trip, the we performed lab experiments which are critical components associated with our current chapter of ecology.  The marine centre had everything ranging from a temperate rainforest to a microscopic plankton collection! In addition to this, the center also exhibits a whale embryo assemblage. Students explored a wide range of activities while learning skills including observation and analysis. A highlight of the trip included a hike through the temperate forest and a lab students had to construct by themselves to explore animal behaviour. The trip was splendid. Mr McCarthy exclaimed “an experience of a lifetime”. More importantly, it set a foundation for Grade 11 and 12 students to discover knowledge and skills beyond the depths and periphery of their classroom and apply these in the outside world. Who knows, maybe some of us will become the scientists of tomorrow! Areeb S, Rogers ‘20
