A Barbeque for New Beginnings

25 September 2022

Mackenzie House leapfrogs into another exciting year, starting it off right with a house-wide barbeque. Divided into their respective ‘Mack Family’ groupings, the Mackenzie House girls, both new and returning, bonded over an evening filled with burgers and tears.

Our favourite Mack House dad, Mr “Robby” Robinson dusted off his chef hat and fired up the barbeque as he does each year. However, as good as Mr Robinson's burgers may be, they are not the star of the show for the evening.

After plates were slopped and mouths were wiped and the soon-to-be nostalgic dinner came to an end, came the ever-so-emotional singing of Mackenzie House’s signature song I Won’t Give Up by Jason Mraz. This tear-jerker is sung at the beginning and end of every year and never fails to squeeze out a few sobs, especially from our grads. Sophie H, ‘23 claims that “Once a Mack girl, always a Mack girl and graduating will never change that”.
The youngins received advice from their wise seniors on everything from what to bring to Strathcona, to whom they should ask to Snowball. Likewise, the grads received advice on how to make it through life after Brentwood. Grade 12 Advisor and Mackenzie House Duty Staff Mr MacDonald advises the grads to “Find your passion, because you will not be successful unless you do something you love”.

Once the tears were wiped, and music descended, the games began. Team bonding activities, including an impromptu talent show and a vicious game of musical chairs, revealed the competitive spirit in even the classiest Mackenzie girls as they rugby-tackled the duty staff out of their chairs.

For some, this traditional beginning-of-year barbeque sets the stopwatch ticking, counting down the seconds until graduation, giving our grads a taste of the emotions that will soon be experienced on the dreaded last night in the house. House Captain Beluchi O, ‘23 reports that she is “excited for the opportunity to lead and represent Mack House but scared that the time will slip right through [her] fingers”. However, for the new members of our family, it offers an insight into the special sisterhood they are about to become a part of; a sisterhood where unbreakable bonds will be built and a second family will surround them.

To our Houseparents and Duty Staff, the Mackenzie House girls are so grateful. To Ms Nasmith, Mrs Cheung and Mr Robinson who made this all happen, both the barbeque and getting us through our time at Brentwood, we owe you big time. It is truly the people in Mackenzie House that make it the best house.
