3rd term sports end with a flurry at the finish!

6 June 2016

The month of May has once again been an extraordinarily busy time for our Brentwood athletes and their efforts have resulted in some outstanding performances.  Our senior tennis team recently returned from the provincial Championship in Vancouver.  The team played some of its best tennis of the year and made it all the way to the final where they lost a very close match to Collingwood but still managed to come away with Provincial Silver.  The junior tennis team also competed in the second ever junior provincial championship where the junior boys came away with a strong 4th place finish and the junior girls captured bronze.  Overall it was an outstanding year for our tennis program.   In golf action, the team participated in the Island Championship where it finished in sixth place.  While it was not Brentwood’s best finish, the team improved nicely throughout the year and with a young core the future looks bright.   Our girls soccer program had an excellent finish to its season.  The junior girls finished third in league and came in fourth place at the ISA tournament.  Meanwhile, the senior girls team battled through an extremely competitive Island tournament to come fourth and earn a rare berth to the provincial championship in Campbell River.  At provincials, despite being shorthanded, the girls played some terrific soccer and were in exciting matches each and every game.  They had a couple of agonizingly close losses but still managed to walk away as the # 12 team in the province.  A great year for our girls! The senior boys rugby team advanced to the newly formatted provincial championship where only the top 8 teams in the province would be represented at the Tier 1 AA level.  Brentwood went into the tournament as the # 5 seed but won a thrilling quarterfinal game over Langley Secondary when they scored on the last play of the game to win 31-28.  The boys came up short in the semi’s against eventual champ SMUS but their 4th place finish is a big step in the right direction for this program and our best finish in the last three years.   Our girls rugby team also capped off an impressive season.  Despite a very young and inexperienced roster, the girls made it all the way to the semi-final of the provincial championship where they lost to the eventual champs from Shawnigan Lake School.  Nonetheless, placing 4th in the province for this team was an excellent accomplishment and the school is immensely proud of their effort. In addition to these competitive teams, we also had a few students compete in the Provincial Track and Field Championship where Sion Griffiths was able to win two silver medals in both the Javelin and the Hammer. Last, but certainly not least, our rowers returned from St Catherines with some terrific results. We qualified for 12 finals and won 8 medals: 4 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze! The crews were as follows: Gold
