2nd XI Field Hockey
The year began with a group of 16 girls assembled on the Cowichan turf, a mix of seasoned and new players, both seniors and juniors. Although practices started with a refresher of basic skills as our coaches assessed the abilities and strengths our the new team, it was clear that we had amazing potential with a little refinement needed. In just a few short months and some fluidity of players moving amongst the A and B teams, we went from a novice group of girls to a team which fiercely dominated other Island teams, making up in grit what we lacked in skill.
With only two practices under our belt, the team dove into its first tournament, the Friendship Cup, at the Cowichan turf which we travelled to for each practice. While the team did not come back with stellar results, it allowed our coaches the chance to see who played well in what position most suited to them. We also set term-long goals for the team. Coaches Sue Whitney and Jenna Warner were particularly impressed with our goalie Oli MB, who, although new to the sport, showed incredible skill and determination.
At our first away tournament at Shawnigan Lake School we faced one of their teams, as well as schools such as SMUS and Collingwood. These teams forced us to work cohesively and ultimately become much closer. The team soon settled into positions as the girls began to understand their job and the rules. Mazie M scored goals for us in each of our games, with Hannah Von the forward line and Grace P at midfield helping to keep the forward line strong and the score tipped in our favour.
With the help of some of the 1st XI team, the junior girls represented Brentwood at Junior ISA’s where they came out with an impressive 5th place. Our final tournament was hosted in Nanaimo with eight schools attending, where we played an exhausting four games. We faced teams that had defeated us previously, this time the gap narrowed and we were unlucky not to place in the final four.
None of the accomplishments of this team could have happened without the continued support of Ms Whitney and Mrs Warner who organized several fun scrimmages against the development team. Thanks to both these coaches and the girls on the team for committing to the commute to Duncan each practice, as well the inspiring sportsmanship and teamwork both on and off the field.
