Yearning for Yale, Clambering for Kelowna
The Junior A Boys Basketball team returned to the hardwood this weekend at Yale Secondary School to play some exhibition games against a couple of the best teams in the province: Yale and Kelowna Secondary.
In their first game of the day, Brentwood squared off against Yale. The game started out extremely close, with the teams trading baskets. The score at halftime was 30-30. The teams continued to exchange buckets as neither could gain much separation in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Brentwood was able to go on a large run, putting them up by 10 midway through the final period. With some clutch free throws from Nathan P, Brentwood managed to hang on for a 61-59 victory. Johnny M led the team in points with 17 while Casper P had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Olamide O and Bruno B also chipped in 12 and 8 points, respectively.
The team played their second game of a back to back against Kelowna. Fatigue and Kelowna’s strong press caused Brentwood to fall into an early hole. At halftime, Brentwood was losing 34-18. After an inspirational speech from Coach Sullivan, the team dug deep and slowly chipped away at the deficit. Brentwood was able to make it a 1-point game late in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, missed shots and a late, controversial call cost Brentwood the win, losing their first game of the season 50-47. Brendan S, who did not play against Yale due to a sprained left wrist, led the team with 18 points. Olamide O had 12 points and 8 rebounds and Johnny M had 6 points. It should be noted that Bruno C suffered severe leg cramps in the third quarter, forcing him to sit out the rest of the game.
Even though the team’s perfect record is no more, they have become closer in light of their recent loss. They look to have strong efforts against Cowichan Secondary and Gulf Islands Secondary in the next few weeks.
