Joe K - Photographer Extraordinaire

Monday, February 15, 2016 - By: Edna Widenmaier

I thought I would share with you some wonderful news that we received in the past few weeks about one of our Grade 12 Photography students, Joe K, Whittall ‘16.

His image “West Bound” has been shortlisted as a finalist in the 36th Annual College and High School Photography Contest sponsored by Photographer’s Forum Magazine. Over 14,000 entries from around the world were judged by professional photographers and college instructors. He will be notified this month if he has won First through Fourth, but as a finalist the photo will appear in the Best of College and High School Photography 2016 edition.

Hard on the heels of that news came the splendid press release that he had been shortlisted as 1 of 20 for one of Europe’s most prestigious student art prizes: the Saatchi Gallery/Deutsche Bank Art Prize for Schools. “Sisimuit” is a village in Greenland that Joe visited this summer during his Northwest Passage trip across the top of Canada with his family.

There were, according to the release, 20,000 plus entries from around the world judged by an Art Critic from the BBC and Telegraph newspaper, the senior curator for the Deutsche Bank, and the CEO of the Saatchi Gallery in London, England. The awards ceremony is March 3 and so Joe and his mom are flying over for that. The photo will be on display at the Gallery from March 3-9.

As an aside, I bought the Westbound image last year from Joe at the 3rd annual Digital Student show that Paul Fletcher organizes locally. Joe and his mom will leave London on the 9th so that Joe - bless his heart - can fly to Frankfurt and connect with the Brentwood Service trip that is spending spring break in Swaziland.

As you might expect, Joe’s photography has played a huge role in our school life for the past four years: he has been an indefatigable and highly skilled photographer for the Yearbook and is currently our Captain of Photography.
