Once More Unto the Breach

How does one define the Brentwood Senior Men's Rowing Programme? I can sum up the experience using merely one word: story. These boys, these ferocious men, have proven to be brothers in the best and the worst of times. From Liam Bontkes' participation to Francesco Maulini's ruthless honesty; from Nate Elmes' biceps to Phil K's quads, from Joe M's vomiting to Peter L's 3x30'; there will always be another story to tell from the oarsmen of Brentwood's Senior Boys Rowing.   We began our year at the Head of the Gorge Regatta, where we posted an impressive win against UVIC’s JV 8+. Progressing through the winter, we won the Head of the Shawnigan 7k race handsomely, and a throw-together quad even managed to win The Duelling Over A Grand Regatta. The boys’ winter training seemingly paid off at our Brentwood Regatta, coming out with a big win in the School 8+ against rivals Saint George’s, and an open water win in the Lightweight 4+. With each practice new stories are created, obnoxious inside jokes are told, and the sheer vocal volume of the Senior Men within Crooks Hall simply cannot be ignored. Mr. Carr has bravely coached this group of miscreants: his patience and understanding of what could be charitably described as "senior boys’ youthful exuberance” has kept us together as a team. We were fortunate enough to have Mrs Amiel return to join the coaching staff and work with the senior group, as well as a special thanks to Mr. Carr Sr. for his continued support. Four years of wins and losses (mostly losses) at Brentwood has also taught me perspective. It is because of this new perspective that I stand now waiting at the end of the line, excited for another story to begin and to end. Approaching my last race as a Brentonian, I can only say what a journey it has been, and what incredible tales I have to tell. The last 250 is here gentlemen, deadlift and go. Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.  Alex Ridenour, Privett ‘2016, Boys Rowing Captain
