Model UN in the Valley

Shawnigan and Brentwood may have set a precedent of cooperation at this year’s Shawnigan-Brentwood Model United Nations conference. In both the organization and operation of the forum, the two schools collaborated to create an overwhelming success. Students from Pacific Christian and Belmont also took part in the April 1st and 2nd conference.

The first day began with a powerful speech by former Shawnigan parent Dr. Kenyan; he spoke about his experience as a medical officer in Afghanistan. Faced with heartbreaking anecdotes, the students were inspired to seek change, both in this Model UN simulation, and hopefully, in reality later in life.
In the UNSC, which I chaired with Calvin S and Ian M, we were very impressed with the resulting quality of debate and compromise and Brentwood’s Sarah K won Best Delegate. Zhi-Yao C representing the People’s Republic of China, won best delegate, and Max E, representing the United States of America, won Outstanding Delegate. Congratulations to these three!

Upon completing the event, I’m thankful for all of the hard work from the students and Mrs. Day Reynolds. Of the 11 Brentwood students who competed at SLSMUN, four came back with awards, and the rest with excellent experience.  Proudly, we from the dais can say that these awards are rightfully placed in the hands that deserve them. Vive la meritocracy.
