Junior Boys Rowing

6 August 2016
Mr. Simon Beatty, Coach
The Junior Boys Rowing Programme had an exceptionally strong year. With 35 boys in the junior group, and strong coaching at all levels, the athletes worked tirelessly to improve their technique and master the fine balance of art and athleticism that defines the sport.  The season began with medals at the Head of the Gorge in Victoria. Over the winter months, the boys continued to grow stronger with top results at the Shawnigan Lake School Ergfest and the Monster Erg at the University of Victoria. Rowers Oliver W, Privett ‘18 and William P, Whittall ‘18 earned a silver and bronze medal respectively, making them among the top three rowers in the province, while novice rower Valentin E, Ellis ’18 won the top ergometer score among all novice junior boys.  On the water, our crews won a gold medal in the Junior B Men’s Eight at the Elk Lake Sprints. The JV crews also performed well at the Hungerford Regatta at Shawnigan Lake in February, earning numerous medals to set the tone for a strong spring season of racing. At the Duelling Over a Grand Regatta at Elk Lake, the quad won a gold medal, elbowing out strong competition. The junior boys then performed well at the Maple Bay Regatta, continuing to develop their rhythm and technique.  The highlight of the spring season is always the Brentwood Regatta; the junior boys raced in over 20 events and seven finals. The Shawnigan Regatta set the stage for great racing in which the junior boys competed to a high standard in the eight, four, quad, and double categories. It was a strong end to the racing season for the boys.  The Junior Boys Eight continued on to the National Championships in June in St. Catharines to test themselves against the best in the country where the captured Gold in the 4x and Silver in the 8+.  Congratulations to all the junior boys who trained each week, raced with enthusiasm and vigour, and developed in both skill and character.  De Manu in Manum, Mr. Simon Beatty, Coach
