Blisters and cuts, cold and rainy days, sweat and hard work are all very familiar to the Junior Boys Rowing team. The hardships that they have endured through the year had been sacrifices for this famous event, the Brentwood Regatta.  As one of the biggest high school sporting events in North America, hosting 1600 athletes and coaches for the weekend, it’s very important that the home team showcase their skill. So when the time came, Brentwood was prepared to bring its A game. The Junior Boys started off the weekend strong in the semifinal on Friday, finishing second in their 8+, qualifying for the final. With sickness spread through the boat, they put in all they could during the race. Sadly, it wasn’t quite enough as they slipped to fourth place. Disappointed, four of the same lads from the 8+ would also be racing in the four, so they brought more determination and grit to their next race, striving for a better result.  The boys’ 4+ put in a great effort in their race on Saturday which allowed them to qualify for another final on Sunday morning. The Brentwood boat, containing Emma H, Allard ‘18, Oliver W, Privett ‘18, Mason S, Privett ‘18, Will P, Whittall ‘18 and Louis K, Rogers ‘18, started off the race strongly with an early lead for the first 500 meters. St. George’s was hungry for a win though, and they pulled ahead. The two boats raced down the course, neck and neck for the rest of the race. Just as the finish line was approaching, St. George’s got the lead and took the win by 1.68 seconds. Silver for us. With the Shawnigan Regatta in less than two weeks, the Junior Boys are working hard to sacrifice their sleep for “early morning rows in the hopes of getting a better result in the 8+” said Bennett L, Privett ‘18.  The regatta was a success for Brentwood. With lots to do, the sun shining, and new people to meet, the whole experience is something only the Brentwood community can produce.  All we can do now is to wait for Regatta ‘17, but in the meantime the boys have a whole year to improve their rowing … and calluses.  Lauchlan M, Privett ‘18 & Mason S, Privett ‘18
