Rugby is one of the most physically and mentally demanding sports; it requires strength, a level head, and a heart of gold. The girls’ rugby team has been working on all aspects of the game since term one. The focus of the first term was to introduce the skills and tactics of the game as well as teach its many values. It was the first time many of the girls had even touched the weirdly shaped ball. The girls learned the fundamentals of passing quickly by repeating the motion until they couldn’t forget it even if they wanted to. “Follow through” and “Get your hands up” are phrases that are most likely imprinted in their brains for the remainder of their Brentwood careers, if not their lives.  With the second term came the ideal muddy rugby weather. We began to introduce proper tackling techniques, and simple game strategies. The new girls were brave, and embraced the concept of picking a target and putting a shoulder into it. Positions began to be appointed, and one of rugby’s greatest aspects was exposed: rugby is a game for all shapes and sizes. No matter who you are, if you are eager and determined, there is a place for you on the team. With positions assigned, we progressed steadily throughout the terms, and were eager to test ourselves in a game situation.  Third term was it: what we worked for had finally arrived. Our first big test was the Vancouver Island 7s tournament. As Mr. Felix explained, our objective was to improve, which we did. We came out first in the tournament, progressing to provincials. At the BC 7s tournament, we had an upsetting loss in the semi-finals, but pulled through in the last game to bring bronze home. Entering the 15s season we had success against Vanier, NDSS and Kelsey, but struggled against Shawnigan. We continued to work hard in preparation for the 15s provincial championship.  A big thank-you is owed to our coaches Mr. Felix (Fefe), Mr. Cowie (Coos), and Mr. Grisdale (Chili) for their continuous dedication to improving the team, and each individual player.  Avi Sharabi, Alex ‘16, Captain
