Fall Term Athletics Awards

20 December 2014
Mr. Blake Gage, Director of Athletics
It is my pleasure to announce the major award winners for our Fall Term competitive sports teams. We will start with Senior Girls Field Hockey. As we know, the Senior Girls had one of our stronger seasons in the last few years coming 2nd on the Island and earning a trip to provincials. We have one major award, the Grimes Award for Inspirational Leadership both on and off the field. This year’s winner is Isabelle D, Alex ‘15. Isabelle has been a stalwart in our program for years and this term was also its Captain. The team had a strong showing at provincials, losing only one game and winning the consolation bracket to place 9th in the province. We have a strong core returning so the future looks bright, but Isabelle and the other Grade 12s will most definitely be missed. In Grade 9 Boys Rugby, we have three awards. The Ivor Ford Award for best Tackler goes to Ethan B, Privett ’18. The winner of the David Mackenzie Boots for MVP in Junior Rugby is Ciaran B, ‘19 & the Dale Bannerman Memorial Award for Grade 9 Player of the Year goes to Oliver W, Privett ’18. The Grade 9 Rugby team had an excellent season getting stronger each week and finished the year on a real high with a terrific performance in the season-ending 7’s tournament where they earned silver. In Senior Boys Soccer, “The Ball”, a one-time award, donated by Tony & Yvonne Carr, of a soccer ball signed by the Vancouver Whitecaps goes to a person who handled the ball more than most, and kept us alive on many occasions with some amazing saves, our goalie, Tao B, Rogers ‘15. The Stephen Sprague Memorial Award for Inspirational Leadership will be shared by Reid A, Whittall ‘15 & Toby CH, Privett ’15. Toby and Reid have been stalwarts in the program since they arrived. Reid was Captain and a rock on the defensive end. Toby was one of the best goal scorers I have ever seen in a Brentwood uniform. The team had a terrific season winning the Mid-Island league and coming 2nd at the ISAs. In Senior Girls Volleyball, the Barbara Stone Cup for Outstanding Service to Volleyball goes to Mollie MG, Mackenzie ‘15 while the Elizabeth Cosulich Award for Inspirational Leadership both on and off the court will be shared by Hannah C, Allard ’15 & Lauren H, Allard ’15. As many of you saw firsthand, these girls had a terrific season coming 2nd on the island and placing 9th at the Provincial Championships. With some strong juniors moving up and a great group returning, the girls should be a force in the province next year. That said, as you can see the leadership of the departing Grade 12s, and these three girls in particular, will be missed. Congratulations to these three and the entire Senior A Volleyball team.
