On October 13th all 269 female Brentwood students attended a seminar entitled “Love the Skin You’re In” presented by Brie Mathers. Ms. Mathers is a renowned speaker who has spoken at events such as TEDx and the Franchise for Humanity Conference at Stanford University’s Global Innovation Summit. She also spoke at Brentwood in 2014. She is a graduate of McGill University, where she majored in Women’s and Humanistic studies. Love the Skin You’re In is all about what it means to love yourself. During her presentation, Brie discussed body image and the negative effects of the media. Ms. Mathers said “You are all beautiful and perfect how you are.” The points that she made touched the girls in various ways. After the presentation, everyone went back to their Houses for a debriefing led by the SPARC Representatives. In Mackenzie House, the girls shared personal stories on how the media has affected them. This discussion brought a lot of emotion which brought the girls closer together in understanding this sensitive topic. Brie Mathers: Love the Skin You’re In has allowed the girls to look at the issue of social media and take to heart how we should all love ourselves, regardless of what the media portrays.
